Chicago, IL — April 2025 — In a historic moment atop the 71st floor of Chicago’s Willis Tower, sauna culture took a bold leap forward. Finlandia Foundation National (FFN) and the North American Sauna Society (NASS) came together to officially launch the Sauna Ambassador Program—a groundbreaking initiative designed to recognize, map, and promote the most meaningful public sauna experiences across the continent.
The announcement was made during FFN’s annual board meeting, where the two organizations also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), formalizing a cultural partnership rooted in mutual respect for the authentic sauna tradition. But the true centerpiece of the gathering was the launch of the Ambassador Program—a first-of-its-kind effort to train and empower a network of sauna experts who live the practice and are ready to guide others.
“This is not just a collaboration—it’s a movement,” said Eero Kilpi, Chair of the North American Sauna Society. “We’re not only preserving the Finnish sauna tradition—we’re honoring a global, ancient practice of communal and spiritual wellness. The Ambassador Program will be our eyes, ears, and heart on the ground.”
Since its founding in 2004, NASS has cultivated a growing community of sauna builders, operators, and advocates. The new Ambassador Program brings this network to life by identifying and elevating public sauna experiences that uphold standards of authenticity, safety, and cultural depth. These include everything from traditional bathhouses and boutique sauna businesses to mobile units and creative community spaces.
Ambassadors will be vetted and trained using criteria co-developed with Finlandia Foundation National, ensuring a balance of cultural integrity and experiential excellence. Their insights will contribute to a publicly accessible map of trusted sauna venues across North America—a guide for anyone seeking meaningful heat, steam, and connection.
The program honors not only the Finnish sauna and its cornerstone of löyly, but also a rich lineage of sweat bathing traditions practiced around the world for thousands of years. These include the Estonian “saun,” Russian banya, Norwegian badstue, Swedish bastu, Latvian pirts, Lithuanian pirtis, Native American sweat lodges, and other Indigenous sweat practices—each a testament to the universal human impulse to heal, gather, and reconnect through heat and ritual.
“This launch marks a pivotal step in honoring and sharing one of Finland’s greatest cultural gifts,” said Päivi Tetri, President of Finlandia Foundation National. “Through this initiative, we invite more people to experience the transformative spirit of sauna—while also recognizing the broader tapestry of traditions that inform it.”
Adding further depth to this moment, Minea Lindqvist Herwitz, FFN’s Communications Director, has been appointed to the NASS Board of Directors. A dual U.S.–Finnish citizen, Herwitz brings a unique perspective that bridges traditional Finnish heritage and modern American wellness culture.
While the MOU signed between NASS and FFN formalizes their collaboration, it is the Sauna Ambassador Program that truly embodies their shared mission: to make sauna culture not only respected but lived, and to ensure that it remains accessible, inclusive, and rooted in lineage.
